KEY 2 - OPEN COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
Indicators
1. In a climate of non-threatening, two-way communication, school administrators and staff collaborate in problem solving.
2. Parents are involved in improving education.
3. Teachers and staff collaborate to remove barriers to student learning.
4. Teachers work closely with parents to help students learn and to improve education.
5. Teachers discuss standards and approaches for curriculum and instruction.
6. Teachers are involved in decisions about student learning.
7. Teachers are involved in decisions about school operations.
8. Parents, community, and staff other than teachers are involved in decisions about school goals.
9. Teachers communicate regularly with each other about effective teaching and learning strategies.

KEYS data indicate that staff at high-performing schools share an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect and a commitment to shared communication. This section addresses how to create opportunities for the exchange of ideas and time to concentrate on issues. After completing the exercises in this section, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the KEYS indicators related to open communication and collaborative problem solving.

  2. Identify barriers to open communication and collaborative problem solving.

  3. Understand the communication styles of others.

  4. Identify barriers to good listening skills.

  5. Master techniques that will sharpen student achievement discussions.
