KEY 2 - INDICATOR 7
TEACHERS ARE INVOLVED IN DECISIONS ABOUT SCHOOL OPERATIONS.

This indicator spotlights issues such as hiring practices and funding.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Most schools have a discretionary fund. If one exists at your school, how much influence do teachers have over how the money is disbursed?

  2. What about hiring practices? How often and in what ways do teachers influence the hiring of school administrators or other staff?

ACTIVITY
  • Since 1997, NEA has partnered with the United Auto Workers (UAW) and the Saturn Corporation to recognize local education associations and school districts for their pursuit of excellence in public education. Each year, recognition goes to partnerships that mirror labor and management success in the automotive industry and result in joint decision making and collaboration. Shared decision-making activities range from course offerings to budget preparation to hiring practices to instructional strategies. As a team, review the NEA-UAW/Saturn Awards on the web (see www.nea.org) for details. Using the descriptions, work with your local affiliate and school district to develop collaborative decision-making strategies.
