KEY 2 - INDICATOR 9
Teachers communicate regularly with each other about effective teaching and learning strategies.

This indicator documents how often teachers talk about student learning. It focuses on how often and where they meet to discuss teaching techniques and what can be done to encourage more interaction among teachers.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Think about your conversation with colleagues in the lounge or in the cafeteria. What topics do you generally discuss?

  2. How much time do teachers spend discussing teaching techniques during staff meetings? During in-service education? During planning days? Post teaching and learning questions around the school to prompt conversation.

ACTIVITIES
  • In a staff meeting, assign separate groups to try to reach consensus on the following questions: What is collaboration? What is communication? What evidence is there that this school practices open communication and collaborative problem solving? What suggestions would you offer for improvement? Report and discuss the findings with the entire staff.

  • Convene work groups of stakeholders—students, teachers, education support professionals, administrators, parents, and community and business members —and work through the process for removing barriers found in the Process Tools section later in this section.

  • As a school staff and community, look at open communication and collaborative problem solving in your school using the tool Current Reality/ Desired Reality found in the Process Tools later in this section.
