This indicator examines opportunities for mentoring experiences.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. How do staff and administrators feel about mentoring as professional development?

  2. What advantages do you see in mentoring activities? What drawbacks do you see?

  3. What changes in current work schedules would be required to implement a mentoring program?

ACTIVITY
  • Before launching a mentoring activity, assess perceptions about its value. Mentor programs can stimulate collaboration among education employees. The mentor is a teacher who has the time and resources to carry out the assignment. Using mentoring techniques, have a team experiment with innovative techniques. The group may:

    1. Commit to a new approach.
    2. Agree to meet regularly to discuss what is happening in their classrooms or in the school.
    3. Agree to observe each other and provide feedback to each other.
    4. Provide ample time to try and learn from the experience.
