 Indicators 1234567891011
KEY 4 - INDICATOR 5
Teachers are prepared to address the needs of students with diverse learning needs and backgrounds.

This indicator examines how well the professional development program prepares staff to teach a diverse student body—among them, students with learning disabilities and limited English proficiency students.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. In what ways do teachers, school and central administrators, education support professionals, and parents provide for the needs of a diverse student population?

  2. What changes in current attitudes, knowledge, skills, and work relationships are needed to develop a high quality education for all types of students enrolled at your school?

  3. What professional development program does the school offer to address diversity in the student population?

ACTIVITIES
  • In a meeting of school staff, discuss individual students. The presenter should develop a school history on the child—including behavior and academic concerns. Members of the group then pose questions to clarify issues and offer suggestions for solving problems or instructional strategies.

  • Keep notes to share with other colleagues. Other members of the staff may offer additional feedback based on their experiences.
